The foundation of this institute was laid in 1959 and since then it has become a strong pillar of technical education.
About ITI Indranagar, Tripura
Initially, this institute had only 4 trades (vocational courses) and space for 64 students. But as time passed, ITI Indranagar constantly improved its infrastructure, facilities and quality of courses. Today this institute has become not just an education center, but a major center of skill building. Thousands of students are strengthening the economy of the country and the state by taking training from here.
In 2004, this institute received a big financial assistance under the Prime Minister Package. Due to this, now it has the capacity to train 250 students in 13 trades. Subsequently, under the World Bank Assisted Vocational Training Improvement Scheme, ITI Indranagar was declared a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the automobile sector, which enabled admission of 180 additional students.
Now, ITI Indranagar has a total capacity of 430 students.

Admission Process and Student Support
The online admission process has been kept very simple and transparent. Interested students can apply from home.
Also, the institute informs the students to submit the documents for post matric scholarship on time.
Apart from this, there is also a Trainees Area for the students, where they can get administrative and academic help.
Major initiatives of ITI Indranagar
1. Network of ITIs in Tripura
Today there are 18 government ITIs and 2 private ITI institutes in Tripura. Of these, ITI Indranagar is considered a leading institute. More than 4,000 students are being given technical education in a total of 132 trades across the state.
2. Conversion of CoE trades to CTS
In 2019, CoE trades were converted into Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS). Under this, many employment-oriented trades were added:
- Desktop Publishing Operator, COPA and Stenographer trades started at WITI Indranagar.
- Bamboo Works trade started under Bamboo Technology at ITI Udaipur.
- Fabrication trades like Welding and Sheet Metal Work were introduced at ITI Jatanbari.
- ITI Ambassa focused on Food Processing and Baking.
- COPA and Consumer Electronics trades were added at ITI Kailashahar and Dharmanagar.
3. Creation of new ITIs – reaching remote areas
New ITIs were started at Gandachera, Kanchanpur and Santirbazar under ESDI and SPA scheme with the support of Government of India. This also provided technical education to the youth of remote areas.
4. Step towards women empowerment
WITI Indranagar is being upgraded as a Model ITI, with an investment of Rs 800 lakh. A big step is being taken here towards making female students self-reliant by teaching them technical skills.
STRIVE Project – Industry Linkage Initiative
ITI Indranagar, Dharmanagar and Belonia have been selected under the Skill Strengthening for Industrial Value Enhancement (STRIVE) project.
Through this project:
- Industry Apprenticeship Initiatives (IAI) are being created
- State Apprenticeship Monitoring Cell (SAMC) is being established
- Better partnerships are being built with industry groups
- This increases the chances of students getting direct employment after training.
- Recognition of education and future opportunities
Now the Tripura government has recognized the students passing out from ITI as equivalent to secondary and higher secondary (subject to certain conditions). This means that students can also take part in higher education or competitive examinations after ITI.
